A short history of Robert Baird and Sara Alice Nelson by Ruby Martin.

My father, Robert Baird III was born the 8th of May 1854 in Glasco, Scotland. His father, Robert Barid the II, was born in Antrin, Ireland, so you see I am a mixture of Scotch and Irish on My father's side. English on My Mother'side, as her parents were born in England and she in America. I know ver little of my Father's early life except he crossed the plains with his parents when he was only 8 y;ears old. about 1862. He walked bare foot most of the way for his shoes wore out soon and no way of replacing them.

My mother, Sarah Alice Nelson was born in Provo, 2 December 1859. Her parents were married in the Nauvoo Temple in 1847. They came across the plains in 1850 by ox team. Her father was Henry Nelson and her mother was Sara Ann Richmond. Her Grandparents, Thomas Neson and Elizabeth Thompson. Both of my Grandparents on both sides heard of the Gospel over in England and came to America to be with the Saints. They suffered many hardships while young as well as after their Marriage. I am truly grateful for my Pioneer heritage.
Both of my parents homes were in Heber City, Utah. That is where their parents settled after coming to Utah. The parents of my Mother were in Provo for the winter, so that is where and why she was born there. It was in Heber where my father and Mother met, courted and married 2 November 1879, in the old endowment house in Salt Lake, was later endowed and sealed, Nov. 3, 1881. They had to wait for the Temple to be finished.
To Them twelve children were born. Six boys, and six girls. My oldest brother Robert IV, died at the age of three. I had him sealed to them 22 June 1938, in Salt Lake Temple. What a thrill it was, for I came up to Salt Lake from Santa Ana, California, for converence, went into the temple and had that done. I am so grateful the opportunity was mine. Two other boys died at birth, or soon after. Three boys and three girls lived, and are still living, they are Danial C. Sara J. Everett, W. Wallace, Flora and myself. They are wonderful borthers and sisters. I must have been sad times for them to loose six children in the beginning to. Most people would have given up in despair. there was not much hep could be given women in child birth in those days. It was a miracle adn most wonderful that her life was spared. She was a wonderful coman and Mother. When school children were asked, at different time, to look for the most happy and optomistic person in the community, she was chosen by them always. She was a very pretty singer, always singing as she went about her work. ‎(Wish I cou have inherited that talent form her. )‎ She was a very prayerful, spiritual woman. One who instilled may good nobel deeds into the hearts of her children. she always carried her share of the burdens. I am more than proud to say she was my Mother.

Father was an educated man, and was always shareing his worldly possessions with others, until many took advantace of his kindness. He filled a mission in the Southern Sates for the church. He left for his mission before their eleventh child, Wallace was born. Mother milked the cows, and cared for all those five children while he was away on his mission. He enjoyed this service to the church very much. Many Interesting things were told to us as we sat about his knee. Spiritual uplifting experiences. Like walking miles in the rain, sleeping in school houses, sleeping in wet sheets, because it was so warm. slipping away from mobs unharmed, because of being fuided by the Spriit of the Lord many time at the right time. If we could always put the same trust in the Lord as do missionaries, we would never have to worry about anything. All these things have helped to enrich my life and I am grateful for them.
Soon after his rentur from his mission, a group of people were called to go to Wyoming to settle a branchy of the church there. They fullowed soon after. They traveled over land in a covered wagon as well as a one horse buggy drawn bya horse named old Jen. He loved camping and fishing. He loved to fish more than anything else. he used to fish in the Provo river. After going to Wyoming he would send for buckets of salt fish and soak them for hours before he could eat them, just to have fish, and no fresh fish could be bought. I went with him to Burlington on time, a distance of seventy five miles round trip. We had a load of wheat he took to be ground into flour and cereal for the family. I remember on the way back home, just before we crossed a stream a flash flood of muddy water came down. Fifteen seconds more and we would have been in the middle of it. We had to camp for the night, there and my bed was in the wagon on the sacks of flour. It was fun as I look back over it now.

He was on the school board of trustees in Wyoming for years. He was also director of the Sidon Canal. he was a ward teacher in the church and taught many classes for he was a school teacher. He was slo judge for the courts there. Unruly people wer sent to him to straighten out by law as well as for good sound religious advice. He was also a farmer and a fairly good mixer. They suffered many hardships because of poor groughd and not enough water for the crops. Both he and Mother taught us especially the principal of honesty, with everything we did in our lives. That teaching has been of great benefit to me all through my life. I have tried to pass it on to our children and the results are pleasing, for they are all God fearing man and women.
